Only 2 days of 2017 left! Can you believe it???
I hope you all had a beautiful Christmas – I recently posted on Instagram about how I’m usually a little Scroogey around this time of year, but this Christmas Eve I had a shift in mindset.
I was suddenly extra aware of all the people in the world who don’t get to enjoy Christmas for many different reasons – some have no family or friends, some have lost someone close to them around this time, some have no home to spend it in, no money to buy gifts for their loved ones, or even to enjoy a Christmas dinner.
Christmas is not a happy time of year for everyone – and it’s easy to forget that, thanks to the marketing frenzy that it has become (anyone else feel like that’s getting worse each year?!).
So on Christmas Eve, I realised that I should be feeling very appreciative of the fact that I can actually enjoy Christmas with the people I love.
My thoughts are truly with those who aren’t as fortunate this year. <3
So! Christmas is over and 2017 almost is too!
I don’t know about you but I am determined to make 2018 my best year yet.
I’ve realised that I am in control of what kind of year I have, no matter what circumstances arise, because I choose how I react to them and if I let them defeat me.
This is something I didn’t realise at the start of 2017 – and this is how I already know that 2018 is going to be much better.
This isn’t just my reality – it’s yours too.
Are you determined to make 2018 the best year of your life? You can! Simply by being mindful and aware of your thoughts and vibration throughout the year and remembering that you are in control of your reactions to anything that arises.
Choose to see the better side of every situation.
Make 2018 the year you say goodbye to limiting beliefs and negative self-talk and put self-love and improvement before anything else.
There’s one simple rule that makes a huge difference but is so easy to forget:
Motivational speech done. Now, let’s talk inspired actions.
The importance of inspired action
Setting the intention to have an amazing year is great, but to speed that manifestation up tenfold, you should be taking inspired action. These are things you do to put yourself in alignment with what you’re trying to manifest.
Why would you want to do that?
Well, you can only attract what you’re a vibrational match to – which means you can’t manifest a positive new year if you’re feeling shit and uninspired because of the year you’ve just had.
You need to be feeling positive and excited to attract positive and exciting things. Vibrational match. Remember that – it’s basic law of attraction.
Here are 10 inspired actions I’ve put together that you can take NOW to get yourself ready for a positive, fulfilling new year.
1 – Set a theme for your year
2018 is the next chapter – but what do you want it to be about?
Pick a word and choose it wisely because it will guide you through the upcoming year. Every positive action you take should relate to this word. For example, you might decide that 2018 is a year of success for you. That makes success your theme.
Throughout the year, before you do anything, you should take the time to ask yourself: ‘is this action going to contribute to my success?’ If the answer is no, you know what to do.
The theme I have chosen for my own year is action and initiative (typical me couldn’t settle on just one word – and if you can’t either, it’s OK to pick two or even three, but no more than that because it needs to be snappy and memorable).
Why action and initiative? I’ve been guilty of letting anxiety and a fear of failure hold me back sometimes. But I’m not taking that into the new year with me. So throughout 2018, I will constantly be on the lookout for areas in my life where I can take action or use initiative to achieve the things that I want, and then do it.
Now your turn!
2 – Invest in a notebook or journal
I’ve recently challenged myself to journal every day for 30 days. I’m 10 days in now, and I have to say it’s been amazing. My mind feels so much clearer, but the best part is that I feel so inspired – like ideas are just coming to me left, right and centre.
It took me a while to get into journaling because I never felt like I would know what to write. And there’s nothing worse than staring at a blank page, with an equally blank mind and a pen in your hand. But you’ll be shocked at how it flows and how much you get off your mind once you get going.
My journaling practice isn’t fancy- no prompts or elaborate stories. I just start off by writing about how I felt that day and what kind of thoughts came up the most. Like a daily check-in with myself. And from there, it just flows.
I end most of my journaling sessions with a positive list. Things I’m grateful for, reasons why I’m proud of myself and good things that happened that day are some examples.
I strongly recommend getting a fresh notepad with blank, lined paper and starting your own journaling practice. You don’t have to commit to doing it every day if you don’t want to, and you don’t have to do it the same way I do. It’s your practice – do it the way that feels best for you.
However you go about it, know that it’s a really good way to keep your vibration high and your manifesting game on point. I mean, how often do we actually get to sit and think about the things we’ve been feeling and the thoughts we’ve been thinking? Such an important part of the law of attraction made easy with journaling.
This simple practice helps to build self-awareness, keep you in tune and understand how your thoughts and vibrations are creating the things that are showing up in your life as a result. It’s also a great way to release any negativity you’ve been feeling.
Are you sold yet? Start journaling – you won’t regret it!
3 – Make a vision board
Vision boards are one of the best ways to get inspired about manifesting the life you want. One of the most important parts of the law of attraction is being clear about your desires – and what better way to get clarity than sticking pictures of them on a board and having them stare you right in the face!
They’re also really fun to make, and they’re just that little bit more inspiring to put together at important dates in life – like your birthday, or hmm, NEW YEARS. It’s the perfect way to get excited about the 365 days ahead of you.
Now having said all of that, I love vision boards but I seem to have gotten really lazy about making them. I have a plastic pocket filled with cut-outs of things I wanted to stick on a new vision board I planned to make months ago. Life got in the way, and I never put the time aside to actually make it.
HOWEVER. Last week, I stumbled across the PERFECT solution – a digital vision board!
I downloaded this app called Hay House Vision Board and I’ve been having so much fun using it. You can upload photos from your phone, or the internet and stick them straight on your board. You can add text, affirmations, stickers, voice notes and change the background to whatever you like. You can also make multiple boards, so you could do a general one for the whole year and then you could do one addressing a specific area of life, like a finances vision board or a home vision board.
Then once you’ve made it, you can make it your screensaver so you see it every day – for me, I’d definitely see it more often than I’d see a physical one at home as I check my phone a gazillion times a day.
So now there’s no excuse – vision board it up!
4 – Set New Year’s resolutions
I know, I know. New year’s resolutions – bleurghhh.
They have a bad reputation. We set the standard ones like ‘start going to gym’, ‘eating healthier’ – and by January 2nd we’re still bingeing on the leftover chocolate from Christmas and the only workouts we’ve done are walking to and from the fridge.
So we stop bothering with them because it feels stupid and they never get done.
Not this year, though.
This year, we’re setting new year’s resolutions with a difference. These resolutions are positive, inspired and most importantly, they are things we actually want to do.
In fact, let’s remove the whole negative connotation and not even call them new year’s resolutions anymore. Let’s call them New Year Intentions (NYIs).
NYIs don’t always have to be massively challenging. They just need to be enjoyable actions that will create a positive change in your life.
Take mine, for example:
- Start a daily journaling practice
- Monthly moon phase rituals
Some people set a whole list, but I’ve only set 2. I don’t want to overload myself, and I know if I set too many I won’t be able to focus on them properly. Also – they’re based on things I enjoy. Like I said earlier, I love journaling. I also love moon rituals – they’re one of my favourite ways to increase my vibrations so why would I not make it a monthly thing?
To create your New Year Intentions, simply think about the things that you enjoy doing, that can also create positive change in your life, and commit to doing those things regularly.
NYIs like quitting smoking and joining the gym are great, but they’re pretty challenging and you end up berating yourself if you don’t achieve them.
So start small.
Make your NYI to go for a 15-minute walk a day, or start counting steps. Smoke 5 cigarettes a day instead of 10. Take a small part of your big end goal, start with that, and the rest will fall into place.
5 – Start your New Year Intentions now
Don’t wait until January 1st. Your NYIs should be so inspiring that you can’t wait to get started. I’ve already started both of mine, so by the time the new year begins, I’ll be in full swing. This is key, especially if your NYI is to give something up, or is a little more challenging.
You don’t want to be counting down the days until you suddenly have to make a change. This will just make you start feeling all kinds of negative feels about the fast-approaching 1st Jan 2018.
You want to go into the new year already living it the way you want it to be. That’s the key.
There’s no time like the present – set your NYIs and start taking action on them today.
6 – Believe in your New Year Intentions
(I promise this is the last NYI-related action. But this is how important they are!)
You want a fresh start, right?
Don’t look at NYIs as some silly, overrated thing that people do. See them as a real opportunity to have a positive year and a fresh start.
I mean, you can have a fresh start any time of year – but January 1st is so special because, at that point, it’s a whole 365 days to play with.
So much time to make SO MUCH change.
See your NYIs as the first stepping stone to creating positive change in your life.
You don’t have to share them with anyone – in fact, I suggest you don’t. You don’t need anyone’s opinions to influence what you’re doing.
Keep them to yourself, work on them by yourself. Make them a serious, personal thing that you’re doing just for yourself.
7 – Let go of grudges and resentment
You don’t want to go into this new year with any baggage and resentment from 2017. How can you start fresh and manifest an amazing 2018 if you’re still holding onto negativity? Remember – vibrational match.
Do whatever you need to do to let go of any grudges or bad feelings you have – don’t take them into the new year. The last thing you want to do is start your 2018 off with those kinds of vibes.
If you feel that you can’t move on without a release, you can either write your feelings out (in your new journal 😉 ) and face them, or if there’s another person involved, speak to them and try and resolve the situation. Don’t be afraid of making the first move – you’re doing it for you, not them.
Do whatever you can to resolve that situation before 2017 is done. If you know that person isn’t good for you, cut that tie. Leave the energy vampires and negative people where they belong: in the past.
Know that you deserve better than toxic relationships and take only the most fulfilling, trustworthy and healthy relationships into the new year.
Also – how’s the relationship you have with yourself? Make sure it’s great before the new year begins. Let go of guilt or regret. You can’t change what’s happened – but you can choose not to let it eat you up for years to come.
Focus on the good people and the good things in your life. Shift your perspective.
And I know I’m making it all sound so simple, but I’m trying to avoid this post becoming a million words long! For an in-depth chat about letting go of grudges and resentment, read this post.
8 – Release negativity from 2017
Struggling to let go? I suggest you make a list of all the bad things that happened this year.
Yes, this is probably going to feel shit at first. Acknowledge that. Let it all out.
Then slowly cross each thing out on that list and say ‘I release you’. As you watch that line of ink erase that negative event, feel yourself letting it go.
Then destroy that piece of paper. Immediately make another list, this time, of all the good things that happened in 2017. Even if 2017 was an exceptionally shit year for you, you’ll find something. Think of all the things you achieved, everything you learned and all the ways you’ve grown.
Keep this list. Put it somewhere where you can see it, and if any old reminders come up of the bad things that happened last year, re-read your happy list.
We’re not denying that the bad stuff happened. We’re just choosing to focus on the good stuff instead, because that makes us feel better and attract better.
9 – Declutter
Declutter your space. Throw out things you kept but didn’t use this year. Donate old clothes and shoes you never wear. Sell things you don’t need. The saying, ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ gets SO REAL when you become an eBay seller – trust me.
Decluttering is so important – the space you spend the most time in has a direct impact on your thoughts and actions.
If there’s no clarity in your space, how can there be clarity in your mind?
Check out this post on decluttering for a detailed chat on why you need to do this. Something I didn’t mention in that article is that a digital declutter can feel amazing too. Delete any old files and pictures you no longer need – and that includes pictures of those energy vampires you’re letting go of!
Sort your email inbox – unsubscribe from any mailing lists you no longer want to be on.
Create space and allow the energy in your life to move and flow. Get rid of the old, to allow room for all the new opportunities, things and people you want to arrive in 2018.
10 -Set up a regular self-care practice
I feel like everyone was talking about self-care this year. But it really is so important, and if it hasn’t been a priority in 2017, it needs to be one in 2018.
And no, it’s not just bubble baths, although I am VERY passionate about those.
Self-care is taking the time to do anything that improves YOU and makes YOU feel good. Spiritual self-care is especially important to me – it helps me feel connected to the higher power and keeps my mind in a good place.
I like to do a ritual at least once a month where I light candles and incense, clear my space and set intentions with my crystals. One of my favourite spiritual bloggers is Jessica Dimas – she has loads of spiritual self-care tips on her blog.
Some other self-care favourites of mine that are easy and free include meditation, exercise, yoga/stretching and journaling. My Pinterest board Mindfulness and Meditation has a Self-Care section which is full of amazing articles and tips.
