So, this is officially the last day we have left of 2018!
Midnight marks the first of 365 days of opportunity and growth, an exciting new cycle for us – and I’m feeling really positive about what’s to come.
Whether 2018 was the best or worst year of your life, there’s no denying that we all learned a lot from it. I don’t know what it was about this year, but I feel like we all needed to go through it.
Personally, I really don’t know how I feel about my 2018. I took a couple of amazing holidays, I achieved a few goals I set for myself and experienced huge personal growth. But also – there are goals I set for myself that I didn’t achieve.
There are people I started the year with that will not be ending it with me.
I still haven’t manifested my dream career or partner or any of the big stuff that I wanted to.
But you know what – that’s OK.
As I explained in this post – the bigger manifestations take time for a reason. And that reason is Divine Timing – which I trust wholeheartedly. I know that when I’m ready, the things I want will come to me.
One thing I can say for sure is that 2018 changed me for the better – I feel like a totally different person now and I know many of you feel the same.
So – for my last post of the year, I wanted to share the most important lessons that 2018 taught me in the hope that they will inspire you to tap into the power that you have to create an incredible 2019 for yourself.
There will be ups and downs – no matter what
I always start the new year feeling really motivated and positive. I remember blogging about how excited I was for 2018 this time last year. I had such high hopes for it being one of the best years of my life.
Looking back, it wasn’t a bad year – nothing super awful happened. But it wasn’t really a fantastic year either and it was far from the best year of my life. So no – it didn’t go as planned – I had some crazy high highs and some very low lows.
That’s what made the Law of Rhythm, as well as the Law of Divine Oneness really click for me this year.
They’re 2 of 12 Universal Laws (I explained each of them on my Instagram). While the Law of Divine Oneness tells us that everything in our reality is connected: our thoughts and feelings are connected to our experiences, we’re all connected to each other, we’re all connected to the earth – the Law of Rhythm helped me to understand that our connection to the earth is the key to it all.
Is it a coincidence that the way our
The sun rises and sets each day without fail, the seasons melt into each other each year like clockwork, everything has its own rhythm and moves at its own pace and I’ve learned that we do so much better when we accept that this is the way our lives work too.
We have our own cycles. We have our times when we feel motivated and inspired and times when we need to rest and recover. We each have our own highs and our lows.
The lows always have lessons, and when we learn to find them – we turn the negativity into growth and opportunity. So if 2018 wasn’t an amazing year for you – reflect on what the bad times may have taught you.
Know that better is coming as a result of what you’ve learned and who it made you.
Believe that after every down must come an up. Expect the ups and know for a fact that they are coming. That’s the cyclical nature of our lives.
Trust the process
There were so many times this year where I felt myself on the verge of freaking out about my life and what I was doing with it.
But I’ve learned that worrying about your future and things you can’t control will do nothing but put extra pressure on you, which in turn, changes the way you do things.
You’re no longer doing things because you love them, you’re doing them because you feel like you have to.
Social media gives us access to people’s lives in a way we never had before – we can see them on their own journeys and easily get caught up in comparing our own lives to others.
We scroll through endless posts praising the hustle, the grind, and end up feeling like we’re not doing enough when we’re simply living life at our own pace. There’s so much pressure to keep up and it’s not healthy.
I’ve discovered that I’m happiest when I’m living in flow and not rushing or forcing myself to do anything – instead, taking what the universe puts in my path and seeing how I can use it.
Everything is unfolding as it should – that’s the affirmation I use when I need to bring myself back to the present moment and stop freaking out.
Worrying will not solve anything – take things one day, one minute, one moment at a time if you have to. Live life at your own pace and remember that everyone has their own unique journey – there’s no need to compare.
Your moment will come at the perfect time for you.
Patterns are calls to action
Have you ever noticed patterns repeating in your life? I have, and this was the year that I decided to start breaking them by doing things differently. Sometimes, that’s all the universe is asking you to do.
You attracted another person that doesn’t see your worth? Instead of repeating the next toxic relationship cycle – do something differently! I chose to walk away from someone I really cared about this year, out of love and respect for myself. It was hard, but instantly, my whole outlook on what I expect from the people in my life changed and now I see myself attracting people that treat me the way that I want to be treated.
I’ve learned that it’s up to me to put one foot in front of the other and change direction if I want to walk a different path to the one I’ve been walking my whole life. Until I do that, nothing will change.
I’ve spoken to a lot of people who don’t believe in the law of attraction and their reasoning is almost always the same – they think you’re supposed to just think of something and then the universe will drop it into your lap from the sky. Of course that sounds like utter bullshit.
The law of attraction isn’t a tool you pull out of a box when you want something. It’s just a part of life and the way it works.
Whether you believe in it or not, it’s always working and you are always creating.
But the law of attraction alone isn’t always enough.
Thinking about what you want and writing it down on a piece of paper isn’t enough.
While this sets the intention to get what you want, we must never forget the law of action (full post on that here) – another one of the 12 universal laws.
The universe can only say yes – so you need to give it something to say yes to. If you’re wishing for something but not doing anything about it – then you’re only wishing. The energy around that wish is stagnant. You need to get it moving and flowing.
Even if your action is as small as working on believing that things can change and you can have what you want, that is an action that will set the manifestation into motion.
If you want things to change, you have to start doing things differently. Don’t get stuck in the wanting stage. Start taking steps and the universe will provide you with everything you need to move you forward.
Think about it like driving a car. You fill it up with petrol, you put your foot on the accelerator, and the universe is what gets the engine spinning and keeps you moving.
What are you focusing on?
2018 taught me how important it is to stay focused on the right things.
What you focus on expands.
So, when you focus on negativity or things that don’t make you feel good, your subconscious mind seeks out evidence of these things in your reality to prove whatever you are thinking as true. So – you end up seeing more things that make you feel bad, which continues to make you feel bad – it’s a vicious cycle that only changing your mindset can break.
For example, if you’re focused on all the money you don’t have, all the bills you have to pay, all the debt you’re in…guess what – you’ll see more of that.
Switch your focus to making more money, ways to clear your debt, how to make the most out of the money you do have – and you’ll attract much better things.
Remember that not focusing on the negativity doesn’t mean running away from it. In the money example, the lack of money is still there. But what you focus on as a result of that is what changes
There are positives and negatives to everything in life, but sometimes it’s hard for us to see both sides of a situation. If you find yourself with tunnel vision, obsessing over something you want that hasn’t manifested yet, direct that focus into getting better at a hobby, or getting a promotion at your job, or working on your summer body…or anything else.
That’s why the things we want so desperately often come to us when we throw our hands up and say “I give up!” and start focusing on other things. Without our obsessive thoughts influencing the energy, the path for it to come to us is clear.
Journaling is a good way to keep track of what you’re focusing on, so you can be in charge of where your energy is flowing. Looking back on some old entries helped me to see that last year, I was totally focused on the wrong things.
I was investing a huge amount of my energy into people and things that were not serving me in any way. I now see how much of a waste of time that was. As soon as I directed my focus to myself, my fitness and my writing – everything changed. I felt so much more at peace. Find what works for you. Find a place to invest your energy that will return it tenfold.
What self-love really means
Wow, oh wow did 2018 teach me a lot about self-love. If there’s one thing I can take away from this year, it’s that I love myself a lot more than I did when the year began.
I guess I used to think self-love was waking up every single day feeling amazingly confident and comfortable in your own skin. Now I realise I don’t think there’s a single person on this planet that experiences that on a daily basis.
I’ve learned that self-love is about making choices that come from a place of protecting your energy and bettering yourself. It’s about being kind and gentle with yourself, forgiving yourself for bad decisions or mistakes and not beating yourself up.
Self-love is walking away from toxic people and refusing to give them your energy.
It’s recognising when people are projecting negativity within themselves on you – and not allowing their words to change how you feel about yourself.
It’s trusting yourself.
It’s not being afraid to be alone and loving that alone time with yourself.
It’s crazy because making decisions from a place of self-love should be so easy in theory – but it often involves doing things that are uncomfortable.
Walking away from people who aren’t good for you can be hard.
Setting boundaries can be awkward.
Putting yourself first can feel selfish. But it’s so rewarding.
Nothing feels better than inner peace.
